The announcement was made by Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company during a shareholder meeting. You can listen to the full meeting over at The Walt Disney Company (opens in new tab) website. There wasn’t much other news for streaming fans as this was largely a call to keep investors up to date. Some other key announcements included Disney’s plans to reopen Disneyland, along with news on Bob Chapek stepping down as Disney CEO at the end of the year. Disney Plus launched back in late 2019 (opens in new tab) and has seen a supersonic growth trajectory, as evidenced by yesterday’s announcement. Exclusive content was a little thin on the ground out of the gate, with the service largely riding on the success of the Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian, along with its staggering back catalog of Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars content along with hit shows like The Simpsons.  Now things are looking even better for Disney fans though, with the show WandaVision launching to huge praise and the upcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set to keep the Marvel ball rolling. Disney also announced (opens in new tab) a frankly intimidating number of new Star Wars content for the network including live-action series based around Obi Wan Kenobi and Asoka Tano, along with animated series like Star Wars: The Bad Batch. With such a wealth of exclusive content making its way to the service, Disney Plus is finally up there competing with the best TV streaming services (opens in new tab) like Netflix (opens in new tab). It still has a ways to go to catch the 200+ million subscribers that Netflix has, but we have no doubt that the Blockbusters killer is getting a bit nervous about its position at the front of the pack. If you’re not already signed up to Disney Plus and you’re interested in checking out the service then head over to the sign up page to find out more. We’ve also put together a list of the best movies for families (opens in new tab) that includes movies from all the major streaming networks, including Disney Plus.
