Bram was so exceptionally sick as a youth that he spent most of his initial seven years in bed, was dependent upon blood draining, and was presumably not expected to get by. He invested a great deal of this energy paying attention to his mom’s stories and watching the existence of his family and neighbors from the window of his room.
